Hauer's "sounding silence" |
In his early works Hauer appears as a composer, i.e. he works with musical ideas. After his discovery of the twelve-note harmony this process of composing was abandoned and replaced by rules which helped Hauer to devise the twelve-note piece. Hauer was possessed by the idea of leading people less to an artistic experience than to an experience of "intuition". Then they would be able to perceive "eternal, unchangeable, absolute music as a revelation of cosmic order". Experiencing this type of spirituality was what Hauer called "intuition".
