Prang Rods - Salzburg

Date of issue: June 21, 1996
Face value: AS 5.50
Commemorative series

Carrying the Prang rods is one of the province of Salzburg's special traditions and is native to both of the Lungau municipalities of Muhr and Zederhaus. Prang rods are wooden rods whose bark has been stripped away. They are between 6 and 8 meters long and are decorated with floral garlands. A single rod requires around 40,000 flowers and 300 hours of work! There are different theories as to the origin of the Prang rods. According to a story handed down by word of mouth, Prang rods date back to a vow made during a locust plague. Carrying the rods is a privilege reserved for those young men not yet married and the procession lasts up to two hours. Afterwards, the rods are carried to the church where they remain on display in the middle aisle next to the pews until "Holy Women's Day" on August 15.
