Benedictine Abbey in St. Georgenberg-Fiecht, Tyrolia from the series "Austria's Monasteries"
Founding of the Benedictine Abbey in St. Georgenberg-Fiecht can be traced back to the first half of the 10th century. A series of monasteries established in the 11th and 12th centuries established the solid economic basis of the clergy. Originally the monastery was situated atop a 930-meter-high mound in Karwendel. Due to its exposed location, however, the abbey fell victim to repeated natural disasters, particularly forest fires. In 1705 a devastating fire destroyed the abbey beyond reconstruction. The Benedictines found their new home in Fiecht, in the municipality of Vomp, their last major achievement. However, they did not permit their old location at St. Georgien-Fiecht to fall to ruin and today it is the destination of numerous pilgrims, who partake especially in the night pilgrimages held from May to October.
