Europe 1993 (Contemporary Art)
Paul Flora's painting "Flying Harlequin" decorates this stamp. As one of the most well-known contemporary Austrian artists, Flora has captured life's imaginative, romantic side in his works. "Flying Harlequin" reflects Venice's multicolored carnival hustle-bustle as well as the city's general atmosphere. The 1922-born artist forged his own path when it came to applying his preferred themes. Especially inspiring to the artist's imagination were the figures of the Commedia dell'arte, which still today transform Venice into a fantasy world at carnival time. Escape into the fantasy world of these imaginary figures in relation to the progression of Venice's ambiance throughout the decades sets the colorful framework for Flora's themes, which he pursued down to the last detail.
