Rights of the Child
Austria signed the "Convention of the United Nations on the Rights of Children" in the summer of 1992. Herewith over one hundred countries committed themselves to guaranteeing children certain fundamental rights, ranging from a ban on child labor and protection from abuse to educational rights. Acceptance of the convention's text was preceded by numerous discussions and roughly ten years went by before the United Nations' General Assembly was able to finalize the treaty on November 20, 1989. The main goal of this international treaty is not only to guarantee children certain fundamental rights, but also to achieve heightened world-wide awareness of this subject. After signing this treaty, Austria undertook numerous initiatives to achieve these goals.
