Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach was born Baroness Dubsky on September 13, 1830 in Zdislavice, Moravia. She discovered her love for creative writing at an early age, and devoted herself entirely to this passion after marrying Moritz von Ebner-Eschenbach, her cousin. When the couple moved to Vienna in 1856 she tried her hand as a playwright, and not until the age of fifty did she find a literary style which was to earn her great success. With her compositions in the following decade (i.e., Krambambuli in 1884), she is remembered as one of the greatest contributors to native story-telling in the history of Austrian literature. The novelist died of pneumonia on March 12, 1916 in Vienna.
