150th Birthday of Hans Makart
Hans Makart was born on May 28, 1840 in Salzburg. After a brief stint at the Vienna Academy of Art, Makart moved to Munich and in 1861 joined the studio of Karl von Piloty where he studied until 1865. In 1868 exhibitions in Munich of his paintings Moderne Amoretten (Modern Cupids) and Die Pest in Florenz (The Plague in Florence) with their portrayal of nude women created a considerable scandal that won him overnight fame throughout all of Europe. In March of the following year he was appointed so-called National Artist in Vienna. The term Makart Age was coined to describe Makart's embodiment of Austrian allegorical depiction. His impeccable lifestyle made Makart a leading cultural figure of his age and he established the aesthetic ideal of his time in matters of fashion, interior decoration, and way of living. Makart died on October 3, 1884.
