100th Birthday of Leopold Schönbauer
Leopold Schönbauer was born on November 13, 1888 to a surgeon in Thaya in the Waldviertel. In 1908 he began studying medicine at the German University in Prague, which he completed on July 10, 1914 with a doctorate degree. After the First World War he obtained an assistant's position at the clinic in Eiselberg and qualified as a university lecturer with his paper "Experimental and Clinical Questions of Peritonitis". In 1930 he became head of Lainz Hospital's surgical department in Vienna. On April 1, 1939 Schönbauer was entrusted with heading the first surgical clinic in Vienna due to his internationally-renowned achievements. After the Second World War he was entrusted with heading the Institute for Medical History and was made director of the General Hospital by an assembly of its workers and employees. He was active in this capacity until 1960 and thereby also played an authoritative role in the planning of the new General Hospital.
