Wels, FranzWels, Franz, b. Maribor, Slovenia (then Marburg), Feb. 10, 1873, d. Vienna, Oct. 18, 1940, engineer. Pioneer of aeroplane construction and partner of I. Etrich; W. achieved the first glide on Oct. 6, 1906 with an "Etrich-Taube" aeroplane.
