Waismann, Friedrich


Waismann, Friedrich, b. Vienna, March 21, 1896, d. Oxford (United Kingdom), Nov. 4, 1959, philosopher. Studied mathematics (under H. Hahn) and physics and later philosophy (under M. Schlick) in Vienna. Co-founder of the Vienna Circle, 1929-1936 assistant to M. Schlick, propagated L. Wittgenstein's philosophy. 1937 emigrated to England. Until 1939 lecturer at the faculty of Moral Sciences at Cambridge University and then Professor of Mathematical Philosophy (later Philosophy of Science) at Oxford. Originally a strict neopositivist, later more under the influence of Wittgenstein.
