Volkskundeatlas, ÖsterreichischerVolkskundeatlas, Österreichischer (Atlas of Austrian Folklore), atlas compiled on the basis of questionnaires concerning various aspects of folklore (types of settlement, land-use patterns, farmstead types, house types, agricultural equipment, folk costumes, food, customs, social and religious folklore, popular art, games, sports, folk tales) that were prepared and analysed in line with academic standards. The project was financed by the "Society for the Folklore Atlas in Austria" (founded in 1955). The Atlas of Austrian Folklore was published in 6 phases from 1959 to 1979 under the patronage of the Austrian Academy of Sciences; it encompasses 117 sheets and several annotation volumes. From the 2nd phase onwards, the project was headed by R. Wolfram. Maps and annotations continued in the Atlas of Austrian Folklore provide information on the geographic distribution and historical development of various elements of a popular culture that was chiefly regarded as pertaining to the peasant and rural community. The Atlas of Austrian Folklore was the last major publication of the so-called agrarian phase of academic Folklore Studies in Austria.
