Strauß, Josef, b. Vienna, Aug. 22, 1827, d. Vienna, July 22, 1870, composer, originally architect and inventor; son of Johann Strauß the Elder, from 1862 directed the Strauß Orchestra together with his brother Johann Strauß the Younger; pursued a more poetic style of composition influenced by Franz Schubert, H. Berlioz and F. Chopin.


Works: waltzes: Sphärenklänge; Delirienwalzer; Dorfschwalben aus Österreich; Mein Lebenslauf ist Lieb´ und Lust. - Operettas, dances.
