SpanienkämpferSpanish Civil War, Austrian Participants in the: about 1,500 Austrians fought in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 on the side of the Spanish Republic. Most of these Austrians had decided to continue the militant fight against fascism and for democracy and socialism in Spain when the February uprisings of 1934 were defeated at home. Among the international brigades the "February 12" batallion consisted mainly of Austrians. About 220 Austrians died in this war. During World War II, 117 Austrian participants in the Spanish Civil War died as members of the allied armies or in German concentration camps; two fighters died in Stalin's camps.
