Schwanthaler, BildhauerfamilieSchwanthaler, family of sculptors (Baroque, Rococo); lived in Upper Austria in the 17th-19th centuries. The family descends from Hans S. (originally Schwabenthaler), who in 1632 settled at Ried im Innkreis, where the family workshop was located until 1838. His son Thomas Schwanthaler later took over the workshop; his sons in turn were Johann Franz Schwanthaler and Franz Matthias Schwanthaler. Johann Franz was the father of Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder. His sons in turn were Franz Jakob Schwanthaler and Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Younger. The last representative of the family was Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler, son of Franz Jakob S. Literature: Die Bildhauerfamilie S. 1633-1848, exhibition catalogue, Reichersberg 1974; J.
