Schöpf, Josef, b. Telfs (Tyrol), Feb. 2, 1745, d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), Sept. 15, 1822. Painter of the late baroque era. Pupil and assistant of M. Knoller and A. R. Mengs, 1775-1783 in Rome, then in Innsbruck. He combined the baroque tradition with classicist forms.


Works: wall and ceiling paintings and altar pieces: Innsbruck, cathedral, 1789, and Johann Nepomuk Church, 1794; Brixen im Thale, 1795; Volders, 1798; Stams (collegiate church and parish church), 1800/01; St. Johann in Ahrn (Antonius Chapel), 1803; Schwaz, 1807; Wattens, 1810.
