Vienna, March 11, 1772, composer and organist, son of Georg Reutter the Elder, husband of court singer Therese Holzhauser. From 1731 court organist, from 1727 also a composer (mainly operas and oratorios); from 1736 kapellmeister at St. Stephen´s Cathedral (teacher of J. Haydn and M. Haydn); from 1747 kapellmeister at court (reformed the court music orchestra). Was one of the most prolific composers of his time, but his works are of a rather stereotypical nature and not of particularly high quality. Works: about 27 operas, 8 oratorios, 81 masses, 6 requiems, choir music, chamber music. Literature: N. Hofer, Die beiden R. als Kirchenkomponisten, doctoral thesis, Vienna 1915.
