Rappottenstein, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Zwettl, alt. 671 m, pop. 1,844, area 65.72 km2, near the confluence of the rivers Großer Kamp and Kleiner Kamp, in the Waldviertel region. - Concrete works, wood processing, summer tourism. - The town and the castle were founded by the Kuenring family during the first half of the 12th century. Parish church of Rappottenstein, redecorated in Gothic style, Romanesque core, Baroque side altars, neo-Gothic high altar; pillory (1613), the castle is located on a forested hill summit above the river Kleiner Kamp, probably founded by Rapoto von Kuenring (1157-1176), by the 16th century it had been extended to comprise five outer courts and seven gates; typical example of a large medieval castle protected by height, 30 m high castle keep, inner court arcaded, frescoes from the Renaissance period and Gothic chapel (encompassing two storeys) with Gothic winged altarpiece (mid 15th century). Kirchbach parish church (15th century), altered in Baroque style in 1720; Kirchbach open-air museum. Roiten local heritage museum, designed by F. Hundertwasser.
