Popper, Karl Raimund, Sir (since 1965), b. Vienna, July 28, 1902, d. Croydon near London (United Kingdom), Sept. 17, 1994, philosopher, especially philosopher of science. Studied mathematics and physics in Vienna; 1937-1945 in New Zealand, from 1960 professor of logic and philosophy of science at the London School of Economics. Considered the founder of critical rationalism (if an empirical observation contradicts a general hypothesis, this hypothesis should be excluded from the system as falsified). P. opposed a positivist point of view in all scientific disciplines, advocated liberal ideas in politics and opposed authoritarian systems. 1993 published a "Call to the Europeans" ("Aufruf an die Europäer") in response to the war in former Yugoslavia. Honorary tomb in the Lainzer Friedhof cemetery in Vienna´s 13th district Hietzing.
