Communications Satellites: Intercontinental and European message transfer (telephone and data transmission) is carried out by the Post- und Telekom Austria AG, to a large extent via INTELSAT and EUTELSAT communications satellites; Austria is a member of both organizations. Data transmission is performed by the Aflenz earth station (Styria). Communication via satellite-aided broadband data networks is possible via smaller terminals.

The Austrian broadcasting corporation (ORF), together with the Swiss SRG and the German ARD, broadcast the programme "3-Sat" via satellite; many foreign TV and radio programmes can also be received in Austria via satellite. Since 1976 Austria has also been participating in the European Space Agency´s (ESA) F&E Telecommunications Programme.
