Mühlbacher, EngelbertMühlbacher, Engelbert, b. Gresten, Lower Austria, Oct. 4, 1843, d. Vienna, July 17, 1903, Augustinian canon, historian. From 1891 professor at Vienna University, from 1896 head of the (see)Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung; from 1879 had played a leading role in the foundation and management of the Mitteilungen (journals) of said Institute, which soon became one of the leading history periodicals of the German-speaking countries. His studies of the Carolingian period were stylistic masterpieces and shining examples of scholarly excellence. Works: Die Urkunden Karls III., 1879; Deutsche Geschichte unter den Karolingern, 1896.
