Montenuovo, Wilhelm Albrecht Fürst von Monti, Alois

Montfort, Adelsgeschlecht

Montfort, noble family named after their ancestral seat at Götzis (Vorarlberg); founded by Hugo von M. (d. 1235), a son of Hugo von Tübingen (d. 1182), who had founded the town of Feldkirch. In 1258 the family split into the lines of M.-Feldkirch (until 1390), M.-Bregenz (until 1338) and M.-Tettnang-Bregenz (until 1536); a younger Tettnang branch died out in 1787. The huge family property fell to the Habsburgs, their red standard became the coat of arms of Vorarlberg.

Literature: Die Montforter, exhibition catalogue, Bregenz and Feldkirch 1982; K. H. Burmeister, Die Grafen von M., 1996.
