Mehrerau Monastery, Cistercian abbey in Bregenz, Vorarlberg, district of Bregenz, 1097 founded as a Benedictine abbey by the counts of Bregenz, Romanesque church (foundation walls excavated) consecrated in 1115. 1740-1743 Baroque monastery church, 1774-1781 monastery built by Franz and Franz Ferdinand Beer; 1806 abolished by the Bavarians, 1808 church demolished. 1854 taken over by Cistercians from Wettingen (Switzerland). 1855-1859 church rebuilt by E. von Riedel (1961-1964 altered by H. Purin), 1892-1894 monastery enlarged and 1941-1945 abolished again. Founder´s chalice from around 1300; museum, library, school of philosophy and theology, Gymnasium secondary school; mitered abbot.
