Smiřice, Czech Republic (then Smiřitz), Oct. 26, 1801, d. Vienna, Dec. 24, 1889, industrialist, great-grandfather of Manfred Mautner Markhof and Georg Mautner Markhof. From 1840 leaseholder of the Brewery St. Marx, which he bought in 1857. In 1843 he produced bottom-fermented beer for the first time and stored it with the help of a new cooling system. Together with his son-in-law J. P. von Reininghaus he produced compressed yeast for the first time in 1847. Founder of the Mautner Markhof dynasty of entrepreneurs and Mautner Markhof AG.
