Educated in the USA, since the 1960s international engagements (e.g. London, Bayreuth, Vienna, Paris, New York, Berlin), concerts with all the leading orchestras of the world; 1982 to 1984 artistic director of the Vienna State Opera. 1994 and 1996 conducted the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic; 1995 and 1996 conducted the opening performance of the Salzburg Festival.
