Lerch, Theodor vonLerch, Theodor von, b. Bratislava, Slovakia (then Preßburg), Aug. 31, 1869, d. Vienna, Dec. 24, 1945, Major-general, ski pioneer, attended the military academy and war school, from 1897 officer on the general staff; 1910-1912 instructor in the Japanese army, L. (a student of M. Zdarsky and exponent of the Lilienfeld Skiing Technique ) became one of the most important early pioneers of skiing as a military and civilian sport in Japan. 1911 first ascent of Mount Fujiyama on skis (3748 m).
