Leopold II, b. Vienna (Schönbrunn Palace), May 5, 1747, d. Vienna, March 1, 1792, from 1765 Grand Duke of Tuscany, 1790-1792 Emperor, 3rd son of Emperor Franz I and Maria Theresia (baptised Peter L.). Inherited the Grand Duchy of Tuscany after his father´s death, where he implemented a number of important reforms. After the death of his brother Joseph II he succeeded to the Habsburg lands and the title of Emperor. Reversed some of his brother's reforms, ended the war with the Turks in 1791 (Peace of Sistova), ended an uprising in Belgium and joined Prussia in a pact against France, which was in the throes of revolution. His large family continued the Habsburg-Lothringen dynasty in several lines.
