Follows the principles of the free, extended twelve-tone technique in the tradition of A. Webern. Supported Austrian authors (C. Lavant, T. Bernhard, P. Turrini) during the 1950s and 1960s. Was described in the roman à clef "Holzfällen" (1984) by T. Bernhard and procured a provisional injunction against the sale of this novel; his "Tonhof" in Maria Saal (Carinthia) became an important meeting place for artists. Works: Incidental music: Die Rosen der Einöde, 1958; Köpfe, 1959 (both after T. Bernhard); Der Knabe mit dem Brokat, 1963 (after H. C. Artmann); Kleopatra und das Krokodil, 1984 (after P. Scheerbart); Liebesarithmetik, 1984 (after M. Benn); Lelia, 1993 (after G. Sand). - Orchestral works, chamber music, lieder, masses.
