Field marshal, military leader in World War I, in 1914 commanded the XII corps and in 1915 an army group in eastern Galicia and the Bukovina, from Sept. 1915 to Oct. 1916 commanded the 3rd army in the Balkans and in South Tyrol, then the 7th army in Russia until Jan. 1918, led an army group in the Balkans from Oct. 1918, was entrusted by Emperor Karl I with supreme command on Nov. 5, 1918.
