Interior, Ministry of the; official name :Federal Ministry of the Interior, established in 1848 to replace the "Austro-Bohemian Court Chancellery" founded by Empress Maria Theresia; called "State Office of the Interior" under the Provisional Governments from 1918 to 1920 and "State Office for Interior Affairs" in 1945; merged with the Federal Ministry of Education between 1919 and 1923 (State Office and Federal Ministry of the Interior and of Education); integrated into the Federal Chancellery from 1923 to 1938; Federal Ministry of the Interior since 1945.

Responsibilities of the Federal Ministry of the Interior include public security (maintenance of law and order and public security; weaponry, ammunition and explosives; central office of Interpol in Austria; Europol, air ambulance, passport matters, aviation section of the police, immigration and emigration; Schengen Information System, refugees; clubs, associations and assemblies; civil defence; disaster control, road safety instruction and road statistics); matters concerning national frontiers; citizenship; elections; plebiscites and popular referendums; foundations and funds; maintenance of soldiers´ graves; and community service as an alternative to military service. The Federal Ministry of the Interior comprises the Public Security Authorities (Police) and the State Police. The Public Security Directorates, Gendarmerie, Security Police and the Federal Office for Asylum Seekers are under its control.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior is located in the former Palais Modena in Herrengasse in the first district of Vienna.
