HofkammerHofkammer, authority that administrated the ruler´s assets. First created 1494 under Maximilian I as "Raitkammer" for the Lower Austrian Länder, from 1495 for the Tirol. Under Ferdinand I (from 1527) the Hofkammer was slowly turned into a kind of ministry of finance and commerce for the court and the nation. In 1564 the Hofkammer was split, and Innsbruck and Graz were given their own Hofkammer. From the times of Maria Theresia and Joseph II on the Hofkammer was frequently restructured; 1816-48 the "allgemeine Hofkammer" was headed by the Minister of Finance. Since 1848 Finance, Ministry of.
