Gregor, Joseph


Gregor, Joseph, b. Chernovtsy, Ukraine (then Czernowitz), Oct. 26, 1888, d. Vienna, Oct. 12, 1960, studied literary and theatrical sciences, university professor, head of library; poet, narrative writer and dramatist, author of opera librettos (for example, for R. Strauss). Founded the theatre collection of the Austrian National Library in 1923 which later on became the Austrian Theatre Museum, head of the library until 1954. In 1922/23 took over various theatre libraries; compiled a collection of stage models and costumes; founded the archives of film studies in 1929.
