Gemse

Chamois (German: Gemse), goat-like member of the order of even-toed hoofed mammals, one of the few native European mammals; lives in high mountain regions (alt. 800-2,500 m), especially in the knee timber zone. Its body is 110-130 cm long, the females are always smaller. Males and females have hook-shaped horns that are bent towards the back; reddish gray and brown hide during the summer, darker hide in winter. In a state of excitement they bristle their longer hair on the ridge of their backs, which is used for making the Gamsbart.
