Fremdenrecht

Aliens, Law Relating to: The law relating to aliens regulates the position of persons who are not Austrian nationals. Aliens require a valid travel document (passport) for entering, residing in and leaving Austria, as well as a visa. Exceptions are granted on the basis of bilateral agreements and certain legal provisions. EU citizens are required to have a passport while in Austria, but not a visa and are legally entitled to reside in Austria under certain conditions. If aliens cannot fulfil the legal requirements, they are to be prevented from entering the country and must be deported if they are already in Austria. If aliens wish to establish a permanent place of residence, or plan to seek employment in Austria, they have to attain a permit. The number of such permits is limited.
