Vienna, April 29, 1806, d. Vienna, Sept. 3, 1849, physician, philosopher, poet, literary critic; from 1847 vice-director of the institute of medical-surgical studies at the University of Vienna. As subordinate Staatssekretär he reformed the Austrian educational system in 1848. His poem "Es ist bestimmt in Gottes Rat" was set to music by F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and became a well-known folk song. He was a friend of F. Grillparzer and F. Hebbel.
