Vienna, Nov. 16, 1878, sculptor. Learned many techniques himself in the royal ore foundry in Munich, subsequently apprenticed to L. v. Schwanthaler. called to Vienna by the founder J. Glanz. His best-known works include the equestrian statues of Archduke Karl (1853-1859) and of Prince Eugène (1860-1865), on Heldenplatz in Vienna. From 1855-1858 he created a monument at Aspern in remembrance of the Austrian soldiers killed in the battle of Aspern in 1809 ("Löwe von Aspern"). also worked as a portraitist and was the most important monumental sculptor of Austrian historicism.
