Etzel, HunnenkönigEtzel, (Attila), King of the Huns (d. 453) features in heroic (Epics) as Etzel and is (depicted, in contrast with the Nordic tradition, in the positive role of the mild ruler who grants Dietrich von Bern asylum and marries Siegfried's widow Kriemhild in Vienna in the Nibelungenlied and in the Dietrich Epics; it is at E.'s castle that the Burgundians meet their tragic end. The depiction in the sagas is thus extremely different from Attila's historical image. Literature: H. de Boor, Das Attilabild, 1963; J. Williams, Etzel der riche, 1981.
