Bergrettungsdienst, ÖsterreichischerBergrettungsdienst, Österreichischer, (Austrian Mountain Rescue Service), founded in Vienna in 1896, after a serious avalanche accident on the Styrian side of the Rax mountain (Reißthal mountain path). A non-profit making organisation; structure regulated by the Law relating to Associations with a federal association and branches in the provinces and regions. Responsible for the rescue, medical assistance and transport of people who run into difficulties in the mountains; membership is voluntary and honorary; symbol: edelweiß in a green cross; Alpine Distress Signal, Air Ambulance.
