October 25th: Johann Baptist Strauß was born in the Viennese suburb of St.Ulrich, today: 1070 Vienna, Lerchenfelderstraße 15. |

Johann improvises a waltz "First Thought" on the piano of a summer house in Salmannsdorf (today 1190 Vienna, Dreimarksteingasse 13). This waltz was set to music by his mother and published by the composers third wife for a charity purpose. |

He starts to attend Schottenstift - Gymnasium in 1010 Vienna. |
1841 |
He enters the Commercial Studies Department of the Polytechnic Institute of Vienna, as his father wanted him to become a bank clerk. |
1843 |
Johann has to leave the Polytechnic Institute for singing and composing during lessons. |
1844 |
First public performance of a Graduale at the Kirche am Hof. He founds his own orchestra and with it makes his debut at Ferdinand Dommayers Casino in the 13th district, today called Parkhotel Schönbrunn(Oct.15th). |

Revolution in Vienna
The revolutionary movement of 1848 rocks France and spreads to Germany, Austria, Hungary and Italy. |

September 25th – Johanns father, Johann Strauß senior – dies of scarlet fever. His last great success had been the Radetzkymarsch, composed on the occasion of the Austrian victory over the Italian army the year before. Amid great public participation Johann Strauß sen. is buried at Döbling Cemetery next to Joseph Lanner. Johann Strauß junior unites his fathers orchestra with his own.

Johann Strauß meets Franz Liszt, who directed a Mozart memorial concert at the Vienna Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and attended a Strauß concert at Sperls ballroom. Johann spends his first Russian summer at Pavlovsk near St.Petersburg. These Russian tours often turned out to be really triumphant. |

Strauß meets Jetty Treffz at Todesco Palais. |
1862 |
August 27th: Strauß is married to Jetty Treffz in St.Stephens Cathedral. |
1867 |
The waltz "An der schönen blauen Donau" (Blue Danube Waltz) is composed (op.314). |

Strauß composes the waltz "Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald" (Tales from the Vienna Woods). |

Straußs first operetta "Indigo und die vierzig Räuber (Indigo and the Forty Thieves) is performed at the Theater an der Wien. |

First night of the operetta "Die Fledermaus" (The Bat) at the Theater an der Wien. |

April 7th: Jetty dies. May 28th: Strauß marries Angelica Dittrich, nicknamed "Lily", a singer from Breslau. |

Lily leaves their house in Igelgasse 4, 1040 Vienna (today Johann-Strauß-Gasse 4) and he makes friends with Adele, later his third wife. |
1883 |
First night of "Eine Nacht in Venedig" (A Night in Venice), the only Strauß operetta to have its première in Berlin. It leads to a theatre scandal and wins its world-wide recognition only from Vienna. |
1885 |
First night of "Der Zigeunerbaron" (The Gypsy Baron). Strauß gives up his Austrian citizenship so as to marry Adele Strauß (sic!) as a Saxon citizen of Coburg. (August 15th, 1887). |
1886 |
Strauß becomes a Protestant because as a Catholic he would not have got a permit to marry Adele. |
1899 |
Johann Strauß dies. Three days later he is laid to rest at the Central Cemetery; he is given a grave of honour next to Schubert, Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. |
1907 |
Edward, Johann Straußs younger brother orders all the material of the Strauß to be burnt. |
1930 |
Adele Strauß, his third wife, dies. |
