Commemorative series

This year, Austria celebrates it's 1,000th birthday with numerous festivities throughout the country. To commemorate Austria's first official naming 1,000 years ago, the Austrian Post and Telecom honors this occasion in it's own way with the issuance of a ten-part commemorative series. The ninth stamp in this series portrays that individual who signed the international treaty for Austria in 1955 - Leopold Figl. Although Austria had a legitimized body of representatives and government elected by the people since November 1945, the Allies occupied Austria for 10 years. Because negotiations became bogged down, the country fell victim to the Cold War. Only in 1955 was a breakthrough possible when an Austrian delegation in Moscow, among which was Austria's foreign minister Leopold Figl among others, promised the Soviets that Austria would remain neutral according to the Swiss model. On May 5, 1955 the "International Treaty with respect to an independent and democratic Austria" was ratified in Vienna. With it's signing the Foreign Ministers of the Allied Powers confirmed the withdrawal of the occupation troops. Leopold Figl was able to announce to the gathered masses "Austria is free!" from the balcony of Belvedere Castle.
