500th Anniversary of European Postal Routes
This jubilee edition stamp depicts the Postreiterlein (little postman on horseback) as painted by Albrecht Duerer in the year 1496, and copper script illustrates the dynamic development of the postal system at that time. The year 1490 marked the beginning of the transport of written messages via established routes. Instituted by Emperor Maximilian I, these postal routes linked his royal estates in northwestern Europe to Innsbruck, the city of his imperial residence. In those days, a letter traveling from Brussels to Innsbruck, or vice-versa, took six and a half days to reach its destination.
