Mozart died on December 5th, 1791, 5 minutes to one. He was 35 years old. According to the customs of the age he was buried on December 6th, at St.Marx Cemetery, 3,64 km outside the town, in a pit grave together with other deceased. A funeral service was held before in a chapel at St.Stephen’s, in the presence of the male members of his family, the composers Antonio Salieri (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon")and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, and then, according to Joseph II’s burial regulations, the body was interred in a cemetery outside the city walls.

No stone, no crucifix was set up. This fact made it impossible later on to locate the exact spot where his remains were buried.

As late as November 18th, 1855, a commission tried to find the forgotten grave. The present memorial at St.Marx Cemetery shows an unfinished pillar and an angel with an extinguished torch. This memorial has become a place of pilgrimage for all Mozart admirers.
