The great masters of the waltz (after 1820) were: Lanner, Johann Strauß sen. and his sons Johann Strauß jun. (called the Waltz King), Joseph and Edward Strauß. They perfected the waltz to its pinnacle and carried it all over the world. The concert waltz of Johann Strauß jun. consists of an introduction, 5 waltzes that are tonally linked and a Finale/Coda. Only the central parts of this form, also called waltz strings, are suitable for dancing on the floor.
The waltz played a decisive role during the development of the Viennese operetta after 1860. Vice versa, also the Vienna operetta owed its world-wide fame to the Viennese waltz.
