In 1867 Vienna was by no means on the Danube. The present river-bed is artificial, constructed between 1870 - 1875. As the photo of the Nussdorf wetlands shows, the Danube in 1867 had several branches and flowed through wetlands and uninhabited areas close to Vienna.
