The author of Austria's national anthem, Paula von Preradovic was born on October 12, 1887. In 1889 her family moved to Pola in Croatia, where she participated in the flourishing literary life there. In 1916 she married the diplomat Ernst Molden. During the Second World War, the family endured an especially hard time. Paula von Preradovic captured the last days of the war and the colllapse of Hitler's regime in diary entries. Her literary works consist of numerous poems, prose, and small scenic works. She can be characterized as the "poetess among the people", for whom poetry always signified "an obligation to convey the suffering witnessed". Paula von Preradovic died on May 25, 1951.
