Painters: 200th Birthday of Leopold Kupelwieser
October 17, 1996 marks the 200th birthday of Leopold Kupelwieser, an important figure of the Late Romantic period in Austria. Already in his youth he demonstrated unusual artistic abilities, particularly with plastic. Anton Zauner, the famous Viennese Classicist sculptor and academy professor, recognized Kupelwieser's talent and in 1809 Kupelwieser was accepted into the Vienna Academy, where he majored in drawing. Between 1823 and 1825 the artist spent time in Italy as an escort to Alexander Beresin, a Russian aristocrat. In Rome he devoted himself to the in-depth study of fresco painting. Kupelwieser's style of painting changed after he returned to Vienna. The impressions left by his earlier works, which consisted mostly of sharp portraits precisely capturing his subject's personality, changed upon his return when his painting style became more rigid and abrupt. Kupelwieser was a professor at the Vienna Academy from 1836 onward, and it was during those years that he established his reputation as a religious painter. He is credited with large-size altar paintings and huge fresco cycles. Leopold Kupelwieser died on November 17, 1862 in Vienna.
