75th Anniversary of the Salzburg Festivals
An artists' council consisting of Max Reinhardt, Franz Schalk, Richard Strauss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Adolf Roller realized the idea behind the Salzburg Festivals. These festivals opened on August 22, 1920 on the Domplatz (Cathedral Square) with a performance of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "Everyman", directed by Max Reinhardt. Over the years music gained increasing prominence. Even in 1921 there were numerous concerts and in 1922 four operas by Mozart were performed. Of the 1,843 musical concerts from that time up to and including 1994, 936 were by Mozart. There have been a total of 1,381 stage performances, "Everyman" having been 425 of them. The Small Festival House planned by the Salzburg architects Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels opened in 1963 and holds 1,324 seats and 60 standing room accommodations. Max Reinhardt incorporated the Baroque Riding School Festivals' activities in 1926. It was here that in 1948 Herbert von Karajan first directed an opera, namely Gluck's "Orpheus and Eurydike". The Large Festival House was opened by Karajan in 1960. Since 1992 the abandoned Sudhaus on Perner Island near Hallein has also become integrated into these Festivals.
