Today the United Nations is comprised of 185 Member States. Since its establishment on October 24, 1945 it has dealt with a number of approaches to global problems. Among the highest of its priorities are safeguarding world peace, international security, and the resolution of fundamental matters of environment, human rights, and population development. The U.N. also deals with social problems, matters of foreign aid, refugee problems, and women's issues. The motto of this unique organization on the occasion of its 50th anniversary is "We, the people of the United Nations...united for a better world". In spite of much criticism aimed at its work, the U.N. has made invaluable contributions to our world in the last half-century of its existence. Five Nobel Prizes demonstrate recognition for these indispensable achievements which has been earned many times over.
