National Customs and Folklore Treasures: "Native Costume of the Guardian of the Wine/Vienna"
The ceaseless activities of the guardian of the wine are evident from 1678 through to the 1960s in the areas surrounding Neustift am Walde. Called "Hiata" in dialect, their duties consisted mainly of protecting the vines from grape thieves, birds, and other foes. Since 1753 the guardian of the wine in Neustift am Walde has an added obligation, namely that of holding a church congress each year on the day celebrating the church patron. On this occasion, the "Hiata" wears the historical wine-growers' crown and presents himself to the local wine growers in a festive parade.
