Centenary of the Birth of Herbert Boeckl (painter)
Herbert Boeckl was born on June 3, 1894 in Klagenfurt. There is a glaring discrepancy between the politico-cultural meaning assigned to him in the realm of 20th century Austrian art, and his international fame. After the deaths of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka's relocation from Vienna to Dresden, Boeckl lead Austrian painting out of the stagnation of Austrian Expressionism. The painting depicted on Boeckl's commemorative stamp is that of his "Reclining Woman", a painting from 1919 which ranks as his main artistic achievement.
