Fundamental societal, economic, and political transformations in the past decades have allowed Austria to become one of the world's leading nations. Functioning under democratic principles, Austria used the last 75 years to achieve an internationally-respected position within the world community. Today this position is reflected in the many mediator functions exhibited in its foreign policy. After the turbulence of the First Republic, National Socialism, reconstruction, and re-attainment of sovereignty after the Second World War, Austria is now a country whose social peace and economic security set an example for the rest of the world.
